The Americans with Disabilities Act
The 31st anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is July 26th. The ADA was signed into law by President George H.W. Bush in 1990, and is one of America’s most comprehensive pieces of civil rights legislation.
The ADA prohibits discrimination and guarantees that people with disabilities have the same opportunities as everyone else to participate in the mainstream of American life: to enjoy equality of opportunity, full participation, independent living, and economic self-sufficiency. This year will be the ADA’s 31st anniversary!
The ADA Anniversary provides an opportunity to reflect on the progress made in advancing disability rights, and recommit ourselves to continued advocacy to ensure the goals of the ADA are fully realized.
